As part of its continuing effort to assist in the care of cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, CHAMPS Oncology launched a free webinar today, “The 2020 Pandemic and the Cancer Registry.” The webinar addresses how some cancer patients have had treatment delayed or treatment plans altered because of the pandemic, as patients with cancer are among those at high risk of infection with COVID-19. In the webinar, CHAMPS Oncology recommends a “plan of attack” that includes having registrars collect delays in treatment in a user- defined field.
“This is an unprecedented time in our nation as we all come together to address the COVID-19 crisis,” said Karen Schmidt, CTR, vice president of CHAMPS Oncology. “We want our customers to understand the impact of COVID-19 and cancer decisions to delay cancer patients' treatment which could affect survival in the future. By collecting this data now, we will be able to show the impact of this pandemic in the future.”
The COVID-19 and cancer webinar was created by one of CHAMPS Oncology’s cancer registry experts, Ilona Gyerman, RHIT, CTR, director of data quality and education, and includes topics such as the impact on cancer diagnosis and caseloads; tracking patients directly impacted by the pandemic in the registry database; and the impact on cancer program activities.
