Meet March's Registry Rock Star: Laura

Spring is here, and CHAMPS Oncology is ready to SPRING into our next Registry Rock Star blog! This month’s Registry Rock Star is Laura, CTR. Laura’s been working in the cancer registry for eight and a half years – four of which have been with CHAMPS.

Laura became a certified tumor registrar (CTR) because she wanted to join a team that was helping in the fight against cancer. After taking the exam, her appreciation for the cancer registry field grew even further – one of her favorite things about her line of work is being able to see medicines for cancer treatment advance and progress in real-time.

As anyone in the field will tell you: Cancer registrars are the data information specialists who collect and report cancer statistics. They capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment and health status for every cancer patient in the United States. For Laura, this means being defined by your accuracy and your quality – two characteristics that drive the philosophy behind her work.

“I think excellence in this field is defined by the quality of work you put out and the effort in making sure things are done correctly,” Laura said. “The advances in cancer treatment rely on the data that we put out, and I do this job to help with that effort.”

Laura resides in Smithfield, Utah – dubbed as Utah’s “Health City,” a distinction given by residents to acknowledge the city’s recreational offerings – with her husband, three children and German Shepherd.

In her free time, Laura loves spending time with family, traveling and camping up in Utah’s magnificent mountains. The number one item on her bucket list is to travel to Ireland.
