Meet January's Registry Rock Star: Kelly
Kelly Blog

2021 is here, and CHAMPS Oncology is excited to reveal its next Registry Rock Star nominee, Kelly, CTR! Kelly has worked in the cancer registry for 12 years. She began her work in healthcare as a clinical secretary in a radiology department, assisting with day-to-day operations. It was in this role that a coworker, who was working as a breast care coordinator, suggested the certified tumor registrar certification to her.

“I hadn’t even heard of CTRs when she mentioned it,” Kelly said. “But she thought I would be a good fit, so she introduced me to the person who soon became my mentor for the role. I was very intrigued by the opportunity to help in the fight against cancer without handling direct patient care.”

Kelly has since had two tenures with the CHAMPS Oncology team spanning three years total, capping a boomerang journey that saw her briefly leave the organization and rejoin it a short time later – a period which she says made her realize that CHAMPS is her “one true home.” She’s motivated in her work by CHAMPS’ motto, “Better Data Saves Lives,” to ensure the data she handles positively impacts people’s lives. Cancer has touched the lives of many of her friends over the years, which has made her job a personal mission for her.

One of the ways she makes sure she is continuing that mission is by learning. Kelly’s favorite thing about her line of work is the plethora of opportunities for continuing education, which allow her to grow in her role and better the lives of cancer patient populations.

“What I enjoy most about my work is the constant learning I can take part in, as well as knowing that I am making a difference with my efforts,” she explained. “Learning and making a difference go hand in hand. My work wouldn’t be possible without the necessary knowledge – there’s always something new to learn.”

In her free time, Kelly enjoys spending time with her nephews and attending their baseball games. She and Shawn, her boyfriend, like to go to rock concerts and hockey, football and basketball sporting events. When the weather allows, she loves relaxing in the new pool she and her boyfriend recently purchased.

Kelly resides in Ames, Iowa with her boyfriend. As a non-native resident of the Hawkeye State, she misses several of the dishes made famous in Philadelphia – otherwise known as “Philly foods” to locals. Her favorite food, however, hails from a little further up the Atlantic Coast. She loves New York-style thin-crust pizza, yet another dish that’s difficult to find in Iowa. It looks like she’ll be settling for pork tenderloins and sweet corn for the time being!
