Quality Captain Spotlight: Ilona
Ilona Blog

New year, new Quality Captain Spotlight! In this series of blogs, CHAMPS Oncology highlights members of our quality data team in recognition of their dedicated efforts performing quality control activities, assessments and reviews to further our mission of ensuring better data saves lives™. This installment features Ilona, RHIT, CTR, director of quality and education for CHAMPS Oncology.

Ilona’s story begins outside of the cancer registry field. She started out working in the health information management field and was offered several opportunities for continuing education in that capacity. As part of her educational endeavors, she began to attend events that were oncology-focused. It was at that point that she sparked an interest in the cancer registry field – little did she know that she would soon be asked to assist with data collection for the state of Ohio’s population-based cancer registry, her first foray into the day-to-day responsibilities that come with working in the oncology field.

That was 1990. Today, Ilona’s motivations stay the same. She remains dedicated to learning whatever new things she can and loves working alongside a wide variety of people. She dedicates her work to those afflicted by cancer, as well as her sister-in-law, Mary Ann, who died from the disease when she was 45 years old.

“I do this work for all of the people who have been diagnosed with cancer,” Ilona explained. “I’m also working to honor the memory of my sister-in-law, Mary Ann.”

Outside of work, Ilona loves dining out with friends, going to sporting events or generally doing any sort of outdoor activity – A fan of nature, she likes taking long walks, for example.

Ilona loves spending time with her family, too. Every Sunday, her family gathers at a different family member’s home for dinner and games. That same group has taken annual beach vacations together for decades, showcasing how close their bonds are with each other. Knowing that about Ilona, most wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the number one item on her bucket list involves family: Her goal is to someday take a trip to Alaska to visit with her brother and his family.

Ilona resides in Chesterland, Ohio, a census-designated place about 30 minutes outside of downtown Cleveland. She lives with her husband of 45 years and they have two grown children and one grandchild.
