It’s time to highlight our next Quality Captain! In our Quality Captain Spotlight series, CHAMPS Oncology highlights members of our quality data team in recognition of their dedicated efforts performing quality control activities, assessments and reviews to ensure better data saves lives™. This installment features Theresa Gerboc, CTR, quality data manager for CHAMPS Oncology.

Theresa’s cancer registry career started in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1986. Early in her career, she found herself working under two legendary Pennslyvania doctors, Dr. Bernard Fisher and Dr. Howard Kirtland, both of whom she credits for her clinical competency and expertise. Preparing to take the next steps in her career, she became a certified tumor registrar (CTR) in 1990. After spending eight years managing the cancer registry at the Regional Cancer Center in Erie, PA, she joined CHAMPS Oncology in 2007. As a whole, she’s worked in the cancer registry for over 30 years and counting.

“I have been privileged to work with many brilliant people,” Theresa said. “I know what we do every day makes a difference in patient care in a big way.”

Theresa’s favorite part of her job is the variety it brings. Through her work with CHAMPS Oncology, she is able to encounter people from all walks of life.

“I enjoy the diversity of people I work with,” she explained. “They are from different parts of the country, various ages and backgrounds, some are tenured and others are new to the registry. I just enjoy helping them learn and grow in their understanding of cancer treatment and the importance of what we do each and every day.”

In her free time, Theresa and her husband, Jim, enjoy riding their motorcycle and bicycles. In 2017, they took a road trip on their motorcycle all the way to Nova Scotia in Canada from their home in Erie, PA.

“We got to see the country on two wheels,” she said when speaking about the experience which saw them traveling nearly 1,200 miles.

When it comes time to retire, Theresa would like to get into a lifestyle routine that includes more traveling. One of the top items on her bucket list is to someday see all of the national parks in the United States’ National Parks System.

As for the present, Theresa is continuing her work and dedicating herself to the mission of creating better data that saves lives.

“I learned a long time ago that what we do helps many, many patients,” Theresa explained. “Like most people, cancer has touched my family including my mother, sisters, father-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles and many friends. My mother taught me the value of being strong in your last days and a belief that you do the best you can and leave the rest up to God. I would like to think her strength is my strength and I try to pass that on through my work.”
