ACS Conference Key Takeaways: AJCC 8th Edition
AJCC 8th Edition

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) has announced it has been working closely with all of its member organizations throughout the development of its recently published AJCC 8th Edition Cancer Staging Manual.

So it is no wonder the new edition was a topic of conversation at the 2017 ACS Cancer Programs Conference my colleagues and I attended earlier this month.

What did we learn about the AJCC 8th Edition?

  • The manual has 83 chapters and over 1,000 pages.
  • It was developed by a renowned panels of experts who volunteer their time.
  • It’s coming out effective with cases diagnosed on and after January 1, 2018.
  • There will be many educational webinars on AJCC’s website for registrars and physicians.
  • Edits to the manual can also be found on AJCC’s website.

The AJCC 8th edition has both anatomic stage (a stage that we in the cancer registry industry are familiar with) and a prognostic group stage (including prognostic factors such as Oncotype DX and ER/PR results to calculate stage). We also heard there may be a whole new Breast chapter as a result of some changes to the prognostic factors required to calculate the stage. So keep an eye out for this important update.

The AJCC 8th Edition is just one of the many important topics I came home more knowledgeable about following the recent ACS conference. Stay tuned for more of my key takeaways on topics like Staging, CoC Standards and Survivorship.
