CHAMPS Oncology Hosts Educational Seminar for Clients on CoC Standards, Patient Navigation



On June 28, CHAMPS Oncology hosted its first annual educational seminar for clients, entitled “Paving the Way to Compliance through New Patient-Centered Standards.”

The full-day event, held at the Holiday Inn in Independence, Ohio, featured guest presenters from the American Cancer Society, Commission on Cancer (CoC), Marymount Hospital and Grant Medical Center. CHAMPS Oncology clients from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan attended the conference to learn more about patient navigator programs, collaborative action plans, quality improvement, psychosocial and supportive care, and the new 2011 CoC Standards.

CHAMPS Oncology hosted this event in response to many inquires and concerns about the substantial changes to the CoC Standards. The event, which qualified for six continuing education credits by the National Cancer Registrars Association, featured an in-depth presentation by CoC representatives Karen Stachon, BS, cancer program advisor, accreditation and standards, and Vicki Chiappetta, RHIA, CTR, technical specialist, accreditation and standards. Their presentation detailed all changes to the standards and ended with a robust question and answer session. All CoC-accredited cancer programs and those programs seeking accreditation will implement the new standards beginning January 1, 2012.

CHAMPS reported 100 percent of registered guests attended the event.  The attendees, who represented 50 percent of CHAMPS’ client base, were pleased with the presentations. “[The event was] a wonderful opportunity to get a head start on the future directions of highest quality cancer care and how to move programs to that level,” said Debbie Osentoski, RN, Mercy Memorial Hospital System’s breast nurse navigator.
