Smith to Present at ACS CAN Northern Ohio 2018 Policy Forum

ACS CAN Northern Ohio 2018 Policy ForumCHAMPS Oncology’s Vontyna Smith, MPA, director of client operations, will present at The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Northern Ohio 2018 Policy Forum on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018. This event will bring together key leaders and decision-makers in government, business, research, and academia to discuss key barriers to clinical trial enrollment and potential public policy solutions to these challenges.

During the ACS CAN Northern Ohio 2018 Policy Forum, Smith will be speaking on a panel with:

  • Michael Kelly, MD, PhD, Chief Research Officer, Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute, Akron Children’s Hospital
  • John Nemunaitis, MD, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, & Director of Clinical and Translational Research, and Medical Director of the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center at UTMC and ProMedica Cancer Research
  • Carol Moss, Clinical Research Coordinator, Regional Oncology, Cleveland Clinic Fairview
  • Gilbert Padula, MD, Medical Director, Summa Health Cancer Institute

She will focus on the important role cancer programs play in establishing systems to alleviate the barriers patients face when accessing care or clinical trials. Smith will highlight two American College of Surgeons’ CoC Standards during her session:

  • Clinical Research Accrual, Standard 1.9, requires cancer programs to refer a required percentage of patients to cancer-related clinical research studies each calendar year.
  • Patient Navigation Process, Standard 3.1, requires cancer programs to provide resources, either on-site or by referral, to address identified barriers.

“I’m looking forward to shedding some light on how cancer registries can be a strategic partner with cancer programs and set the stage for a valuable information exchange between physicians and administrators,” said Smith.
